Blithe Spirit

Blithe Spirit at Capital Repertory Theatre

Why see Blithe Spirit?

Noel Coward's classic comedy comes to Schenectady!

Iconic British writer Noel Coward's supernatural comedy of errors comes to the Capital Repertory Theatre for the 2017/18 season! This 1941 play features Coward's sparkling dialogue and a wickedly clever plot that keeps you guessing what will happen all the way to the end! What happens when a widower's once-beloved won't take "til death do us part" seriously, and when his new wife finds out that she has competition from the other side? Can anyone conjure up a solution to this marital woe? Or will it descend into complete farce? Perhaps you can guess that that bit....!

Set in a well-to-do house in rural Kent, England, author socialite Charles Condomine and his second wife Ruth are having a dinner party for their neighbors. As the after-dinner entertainment and as a means to attain some new material for a new book, Charles has invited the eccentic medium Madame Arcati to hold a seance. However, getting her procedure wrong (which actually turns out to be correct), she mistakenly conjures up the ghost of Elvira, Charles' deceased first wife, who is only visible to Charles and wants her husband back, whatever it takes. What transpires is a battle of wills between Charles' spouses, who are determined to keep him - dead or alive.

There is much fine acting by the supporting characters, unfortunately marred in some cases by what is most likely the Chicago conception of a New York accent. The excessive breaks for intermissions do nothing for the pace, which is somewhat deliberate. ... Read more
